Description

What is Staphylococcus aureus? Staphylococcus aureus, often referred to simply as "staph," are bacteria commonly carried on the skin or in the nose of healthy people. Occasionally, staph can cause an infection; staph bacteria are one of the most common causes of skin infections in the United States. Most of these infections are minor (such as pimples and boils) and most can be treated without antibiotics (also known as antimicrobials or antibacterials). However, staph bacteria can also cause serious infections (such as surgical wound infections and pneumonia). In the past, most serious staph bacteria infections were treated with a certain type of antibiotic related to penicillin. Over the past 50 years, treatment of these infections has become more difficult because staph bacteria have become resistant to various antibiotics, including the commonly used penicillin-related antibiotics (1). These resistant bacteria are called methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA.
This group has been started not only for support of people with MRSA and their families, but as a way to share information about treatment. It seems to us that there is a general lack of knowledge in society and within the medical community about MRSA as a whole, how is is contracted and how to treat it. Only when we start to learn more about it can we completely stop the new outbreaks and go back to living normal lives. So here we go. Please feel free to post. MRSA is a lonley illness only because not much is known about it in the community, and therefore those who have it feel as though they can't discuss it. But here we are not alone. Lets help each other and maybe even start others on the path for a cure.
