Pigeon People rescues & protects pigeons. For prevention, we offer people understanding so they will appreciate & respect instead of fear or hate.
Pigeons don’t get bird flu or west Nile virus, so you can’t catch these from them. Disease comes to people from other people more than animals, because we have the same germs. It’s rare for people to get sick from birds, but it’s more likely from chickens & most other birds than pigeons.
Rescuing pigeons is harder because people believe they can’t touch them & leave them outside instead of bringing them to wildlife rehabilitators. Animal cops put pigeons on the bottom of their priority list & sometimes don’t come to save them.
In spite of all people do to pigeons, they like us & can become loving companions, as people who take in flightless birds discover. They’re as friendly as parrots &, like them, play with toys - especially musical ones. Pigeons live on cliffs & so like ledges on buildings. They’re half tame descendants of pigeons from racing flocks or farms, and they give life to cities.
Pigeon People online & in meetings discusses controversial issues like euthanasia. We are against population control. We release pigeons from nets & campaign against poisoning or shooting them & against laws that keep us from feeding them. In NYC, it’s legal to feed birds, but the government wants us to believe it’s not.
If you’d like to keep pigeons off a terrace or a building, killing will simply let more pigeons find the new free spot. The most effective ways are also the most humane & cheapest - mesh, wire coils, & soft spikes.
Do you want to help pigeons? Sincere, courteous, honest pigeon lovers are welcome (but people who prevent our work from happening may be kicked out). Join the discussion at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pijnpeople or contact Al Streit, Director - Pigeon.People@Yahoo.com or 212 873-6030 (US).
